October 24, 2024

Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, שדרות הנשיא, חיפה, ישראל

The event explores the importance of listening in documenting trauma stories, inspired by Dori Laub’s groundbreaking work. It opens with a screening of The Listener, a documentary (63 minutes, by Micha Livne and Ohad Ophaz) about Laub’s life as a psychiatrist, Holocaust survivor, and founder of the first video testimony project. The film showcases his unique approach to recording survivor testimonies and includes archival footage spanning five decades. It also highlights how Laub’s methods were adopted by Testimony 710, a project documenting survivors of the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre. The second part of the event features testimonies from that day, followed by a discussion on the ethical challenges of listening to and recording real-time trauma stories, with insights from Testimony 710 volunteers. The event emphasizes the critical role of respectful listening and ethical documentation, bringing Laub’s legacy into today’s context a year after the tragic events of October 7.
