Testimony of
Tamar Metzger
Tamar was in the shower on Shabat morning when she heard voices in the living room and Yoram, her husband, responding in Arabic. The bathroom door was yanked open, and she was grabbed and then dragged out from her house. Abducted on a motorcycle between two terrorists, then in a car to a house in Gaza. From there, with Nili Margalit who heartened her, they were taken to a tunnel pier and were forced to walk barefoot for hours on end. They arrived in a large underground room where she found her husband, along with others, including children from Nir Oz and Nirim. They arrived at a large compound where 12 of them remained. Alex Dantzig and Haim Peri gave lectures to pass the time, Yoram was their contact person with the captors, Nili Margalit treated them – demanding medical supplies. In the first hostage deal, women and children were released. Tamar was taken out of the tunnel along with Rimon Kirsht-Buchshtab. They were driven amidst a screaming mob as additional hostages were put in the car, they transferred to ambulances and on arrival, in Helicopter to Sheba Hospital where they reunited with their families. Tamar underwent an open-heart surgery upon her release and then joined the evacuated Nir Oz community in Karmey Gat in anticipation for Yoram's release, but Yoram, along with five more hostages, were murdered in captivity. Tamar struggles with the loss and bereavement for them, and with pining for Yoram. She finds comfort in her sons and grandchildren.
