Dudi and his family moved to Kerem Shalom five years before the October 7th attacks. As residents, they grew accustomed to “Red Alert”s. On October 7th, the family and their friends who stayed over after Simchat Torah celebrations woke up with the alarms and rounds of rocket intercepts and entered the safe room. Within minutes, Dudi, a member of the Kibbutz’s civilian security squad team, was asked to prepare to fight a suspected terrorist incursion into the Kibbutz. He never imagined the long battle that was ahead of him. Throughout the day, he and the rest of the squad conducted face-to-face gunfights with the terrorists in the Kibbutz rescued the injured and received support from a combat helicopter. Two members of Kerem Shalom’s security squad, who fought by his side, were killed on Black Sabbath. The squad operated for hours without support from the army. When troops finally arrived, they remained on guard until the last resident was evacuated to safety on Sunday night.
